We must prevent media collapse in French-speaking Quebec

Everyone understands or should understand that the TVA cuts are not the result of malicious management, but of the major crisis in the media industry in general, of course, but in Quebec in particular.

TVA is not just a television station, but the media and cultural expression of Quebec society. We must save TVA, and we will not get there without heartbreaking decisions.

Above all, we must reflect on the collective risk that lies before us: I am talking about the possible collapse of the media and cultural structure of Quebec society, which would suddenly be deprived of the institutions necessary for its identity construction and staging of the major debates that concern it large-scale expression of their life drive.

The digital revolution, if it truly culminates in the collapse of the media, will sooner or later condemn people to a form of democratic liquefaction and intellectual expatriation.

Their political life will be monitored exclusively by public and state media, which will lead to a real democratic deficit. We can imagine what a debate in Quebec would look like exclusively on federal radio and television. It would be catastrophic.

Their cultural life, in turn, is largely determined by the American entertainment industry, which is already colonizing us to the core, with its neuroses and its ideological obsessions.

From time to time, the digital giants offer local, folkloric-style production to the societies they dominate, as if a concession to the vanquished clinging to a dying culture.

This future is, shall we say, terrible. It is that of a people whose soul has been stolen.

From this perspective, the state must devote significant resources to defend Quebec’s media industry.

Obviously no one has a magic formula.

But we understand that this is a collective task, I would even say a matter of national interest.
