Rats are small mammals of the Muridae family. Because of their ability to adapt to many different environments, they can be found in many parts of the world.

These animals are incredibly diverse, totaling over 2200 different species that vary in color, habits, size and habitat. The most common are the country mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus), house mouse (Rattus norvegicus) and black mouse (Rattus rattus).

Their incisors help them gnaw through hard materials like electrical cords and wood. They are agile, easily scale walls and other obstacles, and have easy access to high places where they can find shelter, food, and reproduction.

Rats are omnivores, feeding on fruits, seeds, insects, vegetables, small vertebrates, and leftover food left by humans. They are considered urban pests because they reproduce quickly and transmit disease.

Despite their bad reputation, they are important to the ecosystem, falling prey to predators such as snakes, birds of prey, and even other rodents.
