Guatemala City, July 15 (Prensa Latina) Guatemala has registered 492 positive cases of Covid-19 in the last few hours and the total for the two weeks to date is 6,116, a clear upward trend.
According to the Health Ministry, the number of infected people in the country was still between 1,500 and 1,900 in the weeks of April and May, while in the period up to June 8 it was already 2,590.
By the end of June 23, the number of cases was 4,433 and in the two weeks ending the 7th of this month it was 5,157, the disease warning board said.
This public information confirms an increase in orange communities compared to the previous 15 days, which also reflects the increase in the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid-19.
Since March 13, 2020, when authorities reported the first positive patient here amid the global emergency, the number of infections in Guatemala is 1,266,625 cases and 20,217 deaths.
The health portfolio reiterated the call for the population to continue to implement preventive measures such as hand washing with soap and water, physical distancing and the use of a mask.
The head of the sector, Francisco Coma, warned of a possible increase in cases months ago, but ruled out it was anything to worry about as they were mild, he said.
The experts noted that the XBB1.1.5 subvariant of Ómicron, which is prevalent in this Central American area and much of the world, still deserves attention.
In Guatemala, just under 42 percent of the population is vaccinated against Covid-19, just over seven million residents with two doses, out of a total of 17.2 million.
