More chaos at Puccini’s celebrations: Maestro Veronesi (FDI candidate) conducts La Boheme blindfolded in protest. Whistles and shouts: “Fool”

Started in the shadow of the controversy surrounding conductor Beatrice Venezi’s decision to perform Puccini’s anthem unscheduled in Rome, which was then hijacked by fascism and dear to the heart of the MSI, the celebrations of Giacomo Puccini in Tuscany continue with some tremors. The opening day of the 69th festival in Torre del Lago, in the province of Lucca, begins with Maestro Alberto Veronesi conducting La Boheme blindfolded amid boos and insults from the audience. The director, son of the oncologist Umberto and already a candidate at Sala and then at the brothers of Italy in Lombardy for the last regional, expressed his closeness to Vittorio Sgarbi, who asked him not to direct the opera. “La Boheme under construction” is set in 1968 and its scenography evokes the years of protest, with Mimì in a miniskirt and other reinterpretations. “It betrays every vision and spirit of Puccini,” said the undersecretary for culture. Already on July 6 last year, at the press conference for the presentation of the program celebrating the centenary of the composer Giacomo Puccini’s birth in 2024, Sgarbi contested this new and “heretical” staging of bohemianism with which the 2023 festival will open. “I don’t want to see those scenes,” Veronesi replied to the booed audience. ‘Go away’, ‘nonsense’, ‘stupid’ – some of the insults came from those watching the scene from under the stage while black blindfolded Veronesi directed the opera and some of the audience got up to leave. The mayor of Viareggio, Giorgio Del Ghingaro, joked: “Maestro Veronesi wanted to show that he knew the score by heart.”
