Quebec National Guard: Mental examination ordered for leader of fake police force

The chief of the Quebec National Guard, a controversial organization made up of fake police officers and fake soldiers, has to undergo a “mental examination” to determine whether or not he is criminally responsible.

“The purpose of the investigation is to see if he can tell the difference between good and evil,” Crown Prosecutor Me Annick Arbor told the Journal.

Daniel Pagé, 58, is considered a fan of conspiracy theories. The man from Sainte-Marguerite, a community in MRC La Nouvelle-Beauce, is also the director of the Quebec National Guard. It is a group of sovereign citizens who deny the legitimacy of the law and the state.

He is currently representing before the Quebec Court in Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce on several criminal charges against him. One of them has to do with the fact that he “falsely pretended to be a peace officer” several times in uniform.

“The defendant’s statements startled some in the room. My colleague, the prosecutor, therefore requested a psychiatric report, which was accepted by the judge,” says Me Arbour, who is unable to divulge any further details for the time being.

His lawyer is against it

Daniel Pagé’s psychiatric evaluation was ordered on June 26. He will appear in court again on July 25 with his attorney, Me Caroline Rouleau. The result of his examination will be announced on that day.

“The motion for an assessment of criminal liability is being challenged by the defense,” read the court’s document.

Me Rouleau, who objected to his client’s mental assessment, declined our request for an interview. “I don’t have permission from my client to discuss his file. As such, I will not comment from my side,” she wrote in an email.

The cop’s disguise is complete

The Quebec National Guard chief is still on trial on at least three criminal charges. Daniel Pagé was initially accused of misrepresenting himself as a peace officer. as reported byprotocolin November 2022.

He is also accused of interfering with the work of genuine Sûreté du Québec agents on June 13, 2023.

Le Journal revealed Monday that members of the Quebec National Guard made an attempt to arrest a judge in Rimouskiin the middle of the process.

“One of those present stood up and posed as the chief of the Quebec National Guard. About fifteen people then stood up and turned their backs on the judge,” confirmed Cathy Chenard, director of communications at the Justice Department.

Note that the far-right group filmed their intervention and posted the video on YouTube. The Journal cannot redistribute these images as it is strictly forbidden under penalty of contempt of court to transmit any video or audio recorded in the courtroom.

According to the Justice Department, no charges have been filed against Quebecer Patrick Tremblay, who recorded and released this six-minute sequence.

“As soon as we were informed that this video was being broadcast, we proceeded to report it to get the video removed. We are now analyzing our remedial actions,” says Ms. Chenard.
