Finance Minister Mario Marcel and election result: “People expect actions more than words”
The Chilean Finance Minister referred to the election result and the broad vote of the Republican Party. In this regard, he mentioned that he has met with that party’s bench to push tax reform forward, as part of the consultation process conducted by his department, to include new proposals in the project, the first version of which failed the filter of the Chamber of Deputies last in mid-March . “We are still waiting for the proposals that will come in now that the election process is complete,” he said.
Asked whether broad popular support for this party could change the political dynamic to reach agreements in Congress, Marcel explained that “yesterday’s results largely show that people expect more action than words”. “That means that I think all of us who have some ability to influence this action have an obligation to contribute to this cause.”
Noting that “no one is helped if such important issues as tax and pension reform or the constitutional process itself are postponed indefinitely,” the minister called for progress in a climate of consensus. “I hope that all sectors, whether they have done well or not, have the will to make this effort,” he said.
