“Yes,” Burnham replies. “Let’s get down to business.”

Abrams has long been a Star Trek fan. As Sarah Lyall of The New York Times wrote in March 2019, Abrams “has seen every iteration of Star Trek and can list little-known plot points from incidents buried deep in canon in great detail.” In her book Leadership from the Outside, Abrams uses scenes from Star Trek to illustrate how she solves problems. And she told the Times that she stayed up late watching Discovery in the midst of her latest bid for Georgia governor in 2018.

So Abrams happily agreed to play the role when the show’s creators approached her in 2021, Michelle Paradise, the show’s executive producer, told Variety. According to Paradise, Abrams’ only stipulation was that the makers didn’t ruin her show and only gave her the directions she needed to complete her scene.

“She was very specific about it,” Paradise told Variety. “She wanted to be able to just watch and enjoy when the show finally came out. So yeah, we’ve avoided all the spoilers.”

Paradise told Deadline that “there’s no one better” than Abrams for the role in the scene, which she called an important moment in the show’s narrative arc. “She did such an incredible job, it was a privilege for all of us to work with her and we are so grateful that she joined us for that,” Paradise said.

The scene was filmed in August in Toronto, according to Variety. The Abrams campaign did not immediately respond to The Washington Post’s request for comment early Friday.

Abrams, the only Democrat in Georgia’s gubernatorial race, is running to unseat Gov. Brian Kemp (right) in November. Once the minority leader in the Georgia House of Representatives, Abrams nearly lost her bid for governor in 2018. After the defeat, many considered her a potential candidate for Joe Biden’s running mate, and Abrams made no secret of her ambitions. for the Oval Office.

But apart from his role as a politician, Abrams is somewhat of an erudite. She wrote eight romance novels and opened a couple of small businesses. In college and high school, Abrams directed and acted in plays, according to Variety. That may explain why she took her recent TV role so naturally, Paradise said.

“There’s just something that made us think, ‘Well, of course she can do that,'” Paradise told Variety. “And she did. She just blew us away.”
