Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 departed Montevideo on October 12, 1972 for Santiago, Chile, taking the Uruguayan amateur rugby team Old Christians from the Stella Maris School, as well as friends and family from the group, to a competition. In total, 45 people were on board and 29 survived the crash, which occurred on the 13th.

Of these, only 16 survived the injuries caused by the accident and more than two months of hunger, cold, fatigue and extreme weather conditions.

Due to the extreme conditions on site, the authorities' search for survivors ended after just a few days. The group heard about this over the radio and Fernando Parrado and Roberto Canessa decided to walk up the mountain to look for a nearby village. There they found the knight Sérgio Catalan calling for help. In the following days, a helicopter arrived to rescue her.

The 16 rescued were only able to survive because they fed on the bodies of those who had already died. The solution was found in a collective pact in which everyone agreed that if they did not resist, their bodies would be used for the survival of others.
