An earthquake with a depth of 21 kilometers shook the American Peninsula this Sunday morning. A tsunami warning has been issued.
The United States is on alert. A tsunami warning was issued in several areas of the US state of Alaska on Sunday after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake, the American Geological Institute (USGS) said. The USGS downgraded the intensity of the quake after rating it a 7.4.
The earthquake struck at a depth of 21 kilometers on the Alaska Peninsula at 06:48 GMT or 08:48 French time, about 90 km southwest of the town of Sand Point.
Tsunami risk for US coasts is assessed
The National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, said the tsunami warning affects southern Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula.
“As for the Pacific coasts of the US and Canada, the tsunami threat level is being assessed,” he added.
Alaska is part of the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire. It was hit by a 9.2 magnitude earthquake in March 1964, the strongest ever recorded in North America. The earthquake and tsunami killed more than 250 people.
