A colossal theft of more than $20 million worth of gold and high-value assets took place at Toronto’s Pearson Airport this week, police confirmed.
“The container contained a high-value cargo that contained gold, but not only. There were other valuables too. The total value of the theft is estimated at just over $20 million,” confirmed Peel Regional Police Inspector Stephen Duivesteyn at a news conference last night.
The flight would have taken place on Monday evening after a plane landed, the company of which was not disclosed so as not to prejudice the investigation. The origin of the theft was not disclosed for the same reasons.
“The aircraft was unloaded as usual and the cargo was transferred from the aircraft to a cargo depot,” added the inspector.
After the cargo was finally placed in a secure location, it was allegedly stolen “by illegal means,” the police officer told media.
Shortly thereafter, the theft was reported and an investigation was initiated.
“It’s something very rare,” he added.
According to the Toronto Sun, it would have been 3,600 pounds of gold stolen, or 1,633 kg.
At the moment no arrests have been made for this event, which would be an “incidental incident”. And as for the loot, the police don’t yet know where it is or if it’s even still in the country.
“Our goal is to quickly conclude this investigation,” added the agent, who confirms his teams are examining all possible avenues.
