Honda begins production of new hydrogen fuel cell system co-developed with GM

TOKYO, Feb 2 (Portal) – Japan’s Honda Motor Co (7267.T) said it will start production this year of a new hydrogen fuel cell system developed jointly with General Motors Co (GM.N). , and will gradually increase sales over this decade in a bid to expand its hydrogen business.

Honda is targeting annual sales of around 2,000 units of the new system by mid-decade, the company said Thursday, and is targeting an increase to 60,000 units per year in 2030.

The Japanese automaker wants to expand the use of its new system not only for its own fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), but also for commercial vehicles such as heavy trucks, as stationary power plants and in construction machinery.

Honda will begin production of the hydrogen fuel cell system this year through its joint venture with GM, Honda senior managing executive director Shinji Aoyama told reporters during a company event in Tokyo.

With the “next-generation” system, the company aims to more than double the service life compared to its older fuel cell system and reduce costs by two-thirds.

“As commercial vehicles are in service around the world, they will likely become electrified just like passenger vehicles,” said Tetsuya Hasebe, general manager of Honda’s hydrogen business development division.

This would likely lead to a divergence between battery-powered and fuel cell-powered trucks, he added.
