As a former radio host and historical novelist, Dominike Audet plunged headlong into her new passion: New York-inspired pastries.
“I’m like a cat, I have nine lives,” she bursts out laughing.
The one who hosted Rimouski for several years before joining FM 93 and Rythme FM in 2007 is a self-taught artist who fell in love with desserts at a young age.
A native of Saint-Joachim, she has long immortalized family recipes for donuts and brioches, adding her colorful personal touch to them.
In the past, she often entertained her colleagues on the radio with delicacies.
He used the candy box empty rate as an indicator to test his recipes. Then a colleague brings him a sentence that will give birth to the germ of a new life.
“A producer said to me, ‘I see you baking cakes on TV,'” says Dominike, who has been a lifelong fan of the Great British Bake Off, a pastry competition.
A turning point
In the midst of a pandemic, a Facebook post caught his attention: CBC is seeking contestants for the fourth season of its popular culinary competition, The Great Canadian Baking Show. She doesn’t hesitate for a second and submits her application.
“It’s one of those famous stories where life changes 180 degrees in the blink of an eye,” she recalls.
After several auditions, cakes and tarts made on Zoom, the judges were won over by this ball of energy who loves to cook with obvious passion.
The experience she gained during the filming of the show, which will be broadcast in February 2021, allows her to improve, but above all to realize that she has only one desire: to continue preparing small treats to sow happiness.
Dirty desserts
After more than a year of looking for premises and responding to the ever-increasing demand, she has just opened her first pastry shop, So Dominike, in the Grand Marché.
Dennis Hennessey
co-owner
Inspired by her idol, New York-based French pastry chef Dominique Ansel, she offers big, decadent cookies — don’t miss the one with chocolate chips and Nutella — cheesecake and cupcakes all for one.
“It really is a street dessert. Not necessarily for special occasions, but for pampering in everyday life, decadent, to feel good! brings Dominike onto the market, who also takes orders for wedding or birthday cakes in her likeness: colourful, shiny and never flat!
Her spouse, former radio host Dennis Hennessey, accompanies her on this adventure.
“We’ve wanted to have a joint company for a long time,” she says, adding that he complements her well, especially with the supervision of marketing.
Artisanal production is offered daily in limited quantities.
Attention gourmets: don’t be late to enjoy it.
