A court in Spain has ordered a man to pay his exwife more than 200,000 euros (approx. The verdict was announced on Tuesday (7).
The news was taken as a sign of progress in the fight against sexism and for equality on the eve of International Women’s Day, which is celebrated on March 8th.
The Spanish court ruled that Ivana Moral will be “compensated with €204,624.86, the said amount being calculated by the application of the intersectoral minimum wage every year since 1996,” according to a court in VélezMálaga (Andalusia) on January 15 February , in southern Spain). The defense explained the calculation period was from June 1995 to December 2020, which corresponds to 24.5 years of marriage.
It was proven in the trial that the woman, mother of two daughters and married in separate estates, had devoted herself “essentially to housework” since her marriage, “i.e. h the family with everything that goes with it,” explains the sentence. The man must also pay his daughters a monthly pension, the sentence adds.
financial dependency
In an interview with Cadena Ser Radio, the woman explained that her husband did not want her to work outside the home, although she helped him in the gyms he owned, responsible for “public relations, in short, as a monitor acted everything, what she could.” In addition, she dedicates herself exclusively to housework and takes care of her husband and the house.
“I was completely financially dependent. I felt diminished and restricted in all my abilities. It made me feel threatened, worthless, and lost my selfesteem. I felt very isolated,” he told the Spanish broadcaster.
“[Estou] I’m very happy because I think ‘the verdict’ was well deserved,” Ivana said, recalling that she didn’t feel badly treated during her marriage. “But over time, I opened my eyes […] Economic dependence is also a form of abuse,” he concluded.
