Strong magnitude 7 earthquake off Indonesia

A strong magnitude 7 earthquake was recorded Friday at sea north of the Indonesian island of Java, the US Geological Survey said, with no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

For its part, the Indonesian geological authority ruled out the risk of a tsunami after detecting this earthquake at 4:55 p.m. local time (9:55 a.m. GMT) at a considerable depth of 594 km.

The earthquake’s epicenter was discovered more than 96 km from Tuban and 157 km from Surabaya, Indonesia’s second most populous city.

The quake was felt over a large part of the island of Java and as far away as the island of Bali.

“It was felt a little in Surabaya, lamps swayed,” and the shaking lasted “a moment,” said an AFP journalist on the spot. “People in restaurants panicked and rushed outside.”
