OceanGate, which operated the submersible that imploded near the Titanic wreck with five people on board, announced Thursday, July 6, that it had “suspended its exploration and commercial operations.” The American company was widely criticized after the tragedy, with doubts about the safety of the device.

The Titan, a small submersible about 6.5 meters long, imploded shortly after the dive on June 18, killing all five men, including OceanGate boss Stockton Rush. The debris found on the seabed at a depth of almost 4,000 meters was returned to Earth for analysis.

open investigations

Canada and the United States have launched multiple investigations to determine the causes of the implosion. In court documents from 2018, a former executive at the company claimed he was fired after raising serious doubts about the safety of the submersible. According to him, the plane’s porthole was not designed to withstand the pressure at a depth of 4,000 meters, which endangered the lives of the passengers.
