‘El Niño on steroids’: Huge losses for farmers

Heavy rains that hit the province on Thursday caused several farmers in Quebec to miss out on crops and suffer thousands of dollars in losses.

Mushrooms on raspberries, scab on apples are just a few examples of the consequences of what one farmer calls “El Niño on steroids.”

Farmers not only have to cope with losses due to crop failures, but also through additional workers.

“I have ten workers today who should normally be reaping the rewards […]but our fruit cannot be sold because it is so badly damaged, but that’s why I have to pay so many people to weed the field,” explains Christian Hébert, owner of Domaine Hébert in the Portneuf sector.

“My agronomist has never seen as much rain in our vegetable growing and horticultural production in his 25-year career,” he says.

Industry experts also consider it “outrageous”.
