At funerals for Yevgeny Prigozhinwho died exactly 40 days ago in an unexplained plane crash, dozens of people celebrated the mercenary boss as a patriotic hero of Russia who spoke truth to power.
The Embraer private jet on which Prigozhin was traveling to St. Petersburg crashed north of Moscow on August 23. All ten people on board died, including two other leaders of the Wagner group, four of Prighozin’s bodyguards and three crew members.
It is still unclear what caused the plane to crash, two months after Prighozin unsuccessfully attempted to mutiny. The Kremlin said on August 30 that investigators were considering the possibility that the plane was shot down intentionally.
His mother Violetta and son Pavel laid flowers at his grave in the former imperial capital of Saint Petersburg. Supporters waved black Wagner Group flags depicting a skull and the slogan “Blood, Honor, Country, Courage.”
In Eastern Orthodoxy, it is believed that the soul begins its final journey to heaven or hell on the 40th day after death.
