Nintendo’s foray into film isn’t stopping any time soon: the company has confirmed that it’s working on a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda. The film is directed by Wes Ball, best known for the Maze Runner trilogy and the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto will serve as producer, much like he did on this year’s animated film Super Mario Bros. He will produce alongside Avi Arad.
“This is Miyamoto. I have been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega-hit films. Miyamoto said this in a statement published on X, formerly Twitter. However, we may be waiting a while for the film; Miyamoto said“It will take some time to complete, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”
While there aren’t many details about the film itself, Nintendo says it will be jointly financed by itself and Sony, with Nintendo picking up more than 50 percent of the bill.
“By producing visual content for Nintendo IP itself, Nintendo is creating new ways to give people around the world access to the world of entertainment created by Nintendo in ways other than through its dedicated gaming consoles,” the company said in a statement Statement on the Zelda film. “By deeply engaging in film production with the goal of bringing smiles to everyone’s faces through entertainment, Nintendo will continue its efforts to produce unique entertainment and make it available to as many people as possible.”
Nintendo was previously rumored to be working on a live-action Zelda series for Netflix, but that project never came to fruition.
