MPs have approved British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's controversial bill aimed at deporting illegal immigrants in Rwanda.

British MPs voted in favor of the controversial bill to deport migrants to Rwanda on Tuesday evening, a risky vote for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. In a first vote in the lower house, 313 MPs voted for the text and 269 voted against, giving the head of government a breathing space for the end of the year celebrations.

“Compliant”

This controversial emergency law from British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak allows asylum seekers to be sent to Rwanda. According to the Prime Minister, the text is “the toughest” ever presented against illegal immigration. The text is intended to respond to objections from the UK Supreme Court, which blocked an earlier version of the project last month. The deportation of migrants – regardless of where they come from – to Rwanda was announced in April 2022 but never implemented.

In June 2022, an initial flight intended to bring a handful of migrants to Kigali was canceled at the last minute following a last-minute injunction from the European Court of Human Rights. About 29,700 people have arrived in the UK on small boats this year, compared to 45,700 in 2022.
