Back to Black, a new biopic about the late Amy Winehouse, has released its first footage.
Starring “Industry” actress Marisa Abela as Winehouse and directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson (“Nowhere Boy,” “Fifty Shades of Grey”), “Back to Black” stars Nicky Kentish-Barnes, Ron Halpern and Joe Naftalin as Studiocanal is executive producing and Alison Owen and Debra Hayward are producing for Monumental Pictures from a screenplay by Matt Greenhalgh (Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool).
“'Back to Black' is a never-before-seen look at Amy Winehouse's early rise to fame and the release of her groundbreaking studio album 'Back to Black,'” the logline reads. “Told from Amy’s perspective, the film is an uncompromising look at the woman behind the phenomenon and the relationship that inspired one of the most iconic albums of all time.”
“I don’t write music to be famous,” Abela says, as Winehouse says in the trailer as the title track plays. “I write songs because I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t.”
Jack O'Connell stars alongside Abela Winehouse's husband Blake Fielder-Civil. Eddie Marsan plays Winehouse's father Mitch Winehouse, Juliet Cowan plays Winehouse's mother Janis Winehouse-Collins. Lesley Manville plays Winehouse's grandmother Cynthia Winehouse.
“Back to Black” is the first biopic about Winehouse, whose most popular songs include titles like “Valerie,” “Back to Black” and “Rehab.” Following the singer's death from alcohol poisoning in 2011 at the age of 27, numerous documentaries have been made about her life and legacy, including the 2015 Academy Award winner for Best Documentary “Amy” and the BBC TV film “Reclaiming” in 2011 2021 Amy.” Development of the biopic was first announced in 2018.
“Back to Black” was supported by the Amy Winehouse Estate, Universal Music Group and Sony Music Publishing. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on May 10th from Focus Features.
