“Optimus folds a shirt,” said Tesla’s big boss, as The Independent reported on Tuesday.
The publication received great applause from several Internet users, who particularly highlighted the robot's “natural” and “fast” movements in the comments.
However, in the hour after publishing the video, which has already reached more than 45.8 million views in less than 24 hours, the multi-billionaire provided important information about his true abilities.
“Important note: Optimus cannot do this autonomously yet, but will certainly be able to do it completely autonomously and in any environment (without a table attached to the floor and without a box containing only a sweater),” he clarified.
In fact, netizens have pointed out that in the corner of the video, a gloved hand can be seen that appears to mimic the robot's movements, suggesting that it would be controlled remotely.
“Basically, this is exactly the same thing that remote-controlled surgical 'robots' have been doing for decades,” said a user on Threads, the main competitor to Meta-owned X.
Progress remains impressive, however, as Elon Musk ultimately hopes that the “two-pedal autonomous, humanoid general-purpose robot” will be “capable of performing dangerous, repetitive or boring tasks” and will replace humans to that extent.
“The aim is for them to serve millions of households, for things like cooking, mowing lawns and caring for the elderly,” he said when unveiling the prototype in 2022, according to The Independent.
