The Milan judge has dismissed Elisa Barone, Giorgia's mother, against Selvaggia Lucarelli for online defamation. Barone is the mother of the fifteen-year-old, who suffers from the rare Berdon syndrome. The little girl, Giorgia, is one of the few cases in the world and is undergoing very expensive treatments in the United States. Five years ago, he underwent a whole-intestinal transplant at UPMC Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh. After private donations were made to support treatment, the case began to be talked about in the media. Lucarelli publicly asked how much Giorgia's family received from the local health authority of Lecce in reimbursement for both health care costs and room and board, as well as donations from private individuals through the Stellina di Berdon association. The author herself informs about the dismissal, which was decided at the hearing on December 15th, with a post on her social channels.
“He thought it best to sue me (they always find money for lawyers).”
“You will remember this story – explains Lucarelli – and my request to know how this lady spent the millions that came to her through fundraising. The lady didn't want to show any accounting and thought it best to sue me (you can always find money for lawyers). The judge today finally dismissed his first appeal, writing that it was a matter of national importance and public interest, as the issue of fundraising using family members' illnesses and without reporting was an issue about which people were rightly warned should be. I will continue to deal with this matter because there are many things that do not add up.” And he further specifies: “The lady also tried to blame me for the comments under my articles.” The judge noted that the responsibilities are individual and that I have never encouraged anyone to write offensive messages, but on the contrary have always invited moderation.
Selvaggia's contributions
According to the reconstructions of Corriere della Sera, Giorgia's mother's complaint referred to two posts: one of September 13, 2022, the other of January 3, 2023. In the first, Selvaggia Lucarelli wrote: “To this lady who has received millions of euros .” from the public and private sectors (the collections have been open 24 hours a day for seven years) I have many questions to ask. It's a shame that she's holding back, perhaps she's afraid of the thought that for the first time someone will ask her to explain some unclear things in her story. But if everything is clear, what are you afraid of?”; in the second he summarized the story and asked the Puglia region for clarification.
