The boy was immediately taken to a hospital and was in a serious but stable condition. On January 17, he was flown from the hospital to Maryland for further treatment.

A source told TMZ that the boy climbed into the aquarium with a companion as part of the hotel's shark experience.

The boy went to the bottom of the tank with the supervisor, also wearing a large white helmet and carrying a heavy oxygen tank.

Two reef sharks began swimming aggressively around him before one of them shot through his legs.

The outlet reported that this caused the boy to lose his footing and straddle the shark, which retaliated by sinking its teeth into his leg.

Additional footage also emerged showing employees and a woman standing at the corner of the tank while a man can be heard screaming as the incident occurred.

The boy is then seen being taken out of the water by staff, while the woman filming the video can be heard saying: “He's been bitten, he's been bitten by a shark, mom.”

In the background, a woman can also be heard crying and wailing hysterically while another man begs for help.

In a statement, organizers said: “We have launched a thorough internal investigation and are cooperating fully with the authorities.”

“Incidents like this involving interactions with marine life, even the shark species featured in this experience, are rare and never acceptable.”

The “exciting” expedition is part of the Mayan Temple area of the resort’s Aquaventure Zone.

Guests must wear special helmets to breathe underwater so they can get up close and personal with nurse and reef sharks.

According to People, guests were informed on the resort's website that they do not need to have swimming skills to participate and must be at least 10 years old.
