UNESCO and European Union highlight Caribbean fashion

UNESCO and the European Union have launched the call for the Transcultura Awards, an initiative that aims to recognize and support the creativity of young fashion designers from the Caribbean.

The competition, which is part of the Transcultura program “Integrating Cuba, the Caribbean and the European Union through Culture and Creativity”, has the motto “Made In The Caribbean” and aims to reflect the identity and cultural diversity of the region.

Participants must be between 18 and 35 years old and be nationals or permanent residents of one of the 17 Transcultura beneficiary countries, namely Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cuba, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat. Dominican Republic, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.

Applicants may submit a mini-collection of three pieces in one of the following categories: fashion design, accessories and jewelry. The finalists will be selected by a jury of experts and will have the opportunity to exhibit their work at the Fashion in da House event, which will take place next May at the UNESCO Regional Office in Havana.

The program covers all costs of the finalists to attend the exhibition and awards ceremony in the Cuban capital, where the Transcultura Prize will be awarded to the best work in each category and the Audience Prize. In addition, the jury can award special prizes to works that are characterized by their ecological sustainability.

Interested parties have until February 29th to submit their proposals on the UNESCO website.

The Transcultura Award is a regional award that aims to explore and promote the creative talent of young cultural workers and their potential for activities in the Caribbean's cultural and creative industries.
