American actress and former model Vanessa Williams will play the role of fashion queen Miranda Priestly in the stage adaptation of the film The devil Wears Prada.
This new version was conceived by none other than Elton John, who wrote the original music for the piece, and will be presented in musical theater form on the London stage.
“Bringing Miranda Priestly to life in the West End is a dream come true,” said the actress.
Created by Lauren Weisberger, author of the 2003 bestseller of the same name, the character Miranda Priestly was largely inspired by Vogue magazine editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and was first brought to life in cinemas in 2006 by Meryl Streep. The latter in particular gave the answer to Anne Hathaway, who played the young Andrea Sachs, to Emily Blunt, who played the assistant Emily Charlton, and to Stanley Tucci, who played his right arm, Nigel.
However, no name other than Vanessa Williams has been announced at this time.
“The Devil Wears Prada” tells the story of young journalist Andy Sachs, who is fresh out of university and gets a job at the prestigious Runway magazine, where she has to do everything to fulfill her expectations. Meet the demands of the world's most powerful and frightening figure in the fashion world, Editor-in-Chief Miranda Priestly. Andy sacrifices her personal life to carve out a place for herself in this world, and finds herself adhering to the codes of glamor she once despised.
In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Elton John explained that he has been working on this project since 2017 and that due to the age of the film, it was necessary to adapt the text back to the taste of the film era. “I also said to myself that I want to do modern music,” explained the artist, who surrounded himself with author, composer and performer Shaina Taub and choreographer Jerry Mitchell for the performance of this musical, reported CNews.
