Argentina's poverty rate is rising and has reached 57.4%, the highest level in 20 years, according to the country's Observatory of Social Doubts at the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina (UCA). The index is based on research and a simulated scenario for December last year and January this year, the agency said.

Poverty is growing more strongly in the homes of the working class or those who do not benefit from social programs. In December, the rate in the survey, which only covered urban poverty in the country, was 49.5%.

“After more than two decades of an inflationary impoverishment regime and an expansion of social programs, in addition to a new economic program of orthodox adjustment, poverty continues to increase despite public support,” warns the Observatory in a message on X (former). Twitter).

It is also estimated that the share of the population in need increased from 9.6% in the third quarter of 2023 to 14.2% in December 2023 and to 15.0% in January 2024.

Javier Milei's government blamed the public for the poverty of previous governments, while the opposition blamed the harsh adjustment of the local economy as a factor making the situation worse.

Also in a statement released on “It is easy to go back from 55% to 40%,” he opined in a statement to the channel La Nación +.
