Blue Jays trade Otto Lopez

Quebec native Otto Lopez will continue his career in the San Francisco Giants organization as they acquired him from the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday for a cash consideration.

The utility player was designated for assignment by the Ontario team on Friday. Consequently, the Jays had seven days to decide his fate and opted for a trade. The main prospect will have to impress in next training camp to secure a spot in the big leagues.

Lopez played in the infield and had been with the Jays since 2017. He posted a .258 batting average last season with their AAA farm club, the Buffalo Bisons. The 25-year-old totaled two home runs and 35 RBIs in 84 games.

The Dominican Republic native has played in nine games in Major League Baseball, including eight in 2022. He has remained in the minors since then, falling victim to the Jays' depth in the infield. They particularly rely on Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette and Matt Chapman.
