Putin denies Russian plans to have nuclear weapons in space

Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected US claims about alleged plans for nuclear weapons in space. “Our position is clear and clear: we have always been categorically against stationing nuclear weapons in space and we are now,” the Kremlin chief said today, according to the Interfax news agency, in a meeting with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.

Russia has always called for compliance with existing agreements in this area. Shoigu also stated that Russia does not have nuclear projects in space. The US would know this too.

US government: threat to satellites

Last week, US media speculated about Russia's nuclear ambitions in space. The new nuclear potential should be directed against satellites in space and could therefore pose a threat to national and international security, it was said.

The US government then announced that Russia was developing military capabilities for use against satellites in space. No information was provided regarding the specific nature of this threat.

US President Joe Biden later clarified that “there was no nuclear threat to the people of America or anywhere else in the world.” Everything Russia is doing or will do has to do with possible damage to satellites in space, Biden said Friday when asked at a news conference in Washington.
