Bruno Luperi paid tribute to his grandfather Benedito Ruy Barbosa in chapter (21) of this Wednesday's remake of Renascer. José Inocêncio (Marcos Palmeira) was angry at José Augusto (Renan Monteiro) for turning down a “small piece of land” a reference to the title of the first of Globo's six soap operas, Meu Pedacinho de Chão (1971), which won the prize received a reboot in 2014.
The farmer was outraged when he learned that his son João Pedro (Juan Paiva) proposed a deal to have him take care of the land he won by dividing Maria Santa's (Duda Santos) inheritance. “The brother understands cocoa as well as you and likes this life much more than any of us,” the doctor explained.
“So many people in this life want a little piece of land in this life and my children are throwing it all away. I should hand everything over to the agrarian reform,” complained Marcos Palmeira’s character.
Interestingly, the agrarian reform mentioned by José Inocêncio was one of the central themes of Meu Pedacinho de Chão, which was also shown on TV Cultura. The political conspiracy suffered from the censorship of the military dictatorship (19641985).
In an interview with Memória Globo, Ruy Barbosa recalled that the government wanted to prevent the broadcast of a scene in which one of the characters played the guitar and sang the Brazilian national anthem.
The character was a maestro who sang country songs in his roadside store and began teaching the Caboclos to sing the national anthem. And the Brazilian flag was on the table because I was defending a different nationalism than the one that was out there. The censors cut the scenes because the anthem could not be sung in that environment. That outraged me. I fought and managed to release the sequence.
Renascer was written and created by author Benedito Ruy Barbosa. The first version was broadcast on Globo in 1993. Bruno Luperi is the writer's grandson and is responsible for the adaptation of the rural saga, which premiered in prime time in January. The remake is set to be replaced by a new storyline by João Emanuel Carneiro in September.
