The Israeli parliament rejects the unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state

The Israeli Parliament approved this Wednesday (21) by a large majority a resolution proposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against any “unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state”, which, according to the text, would amount to rewarding “The unprecedented terrorism” of Hamas.

The vote came just days after The Washington Post said the United States and several Arab countries would develop a global peace plan with a timetable for the creation of a Palestinian state after the end of the current war between Israel and the Islamist movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

“This historic vote shows our collective resolve,” Netanyahu wrote on the social network

The resolution, adopted by 99 of the 120 members of the Knesset (Parliament), emphasizes that “Israel categorically rejects international resolutions on a permanent solution with the Palestinians” and that this solution can only be achieved “through direct negotiations between the parties and without “they” can be achieved “requirements.”

It adds that “Israel will continue to oppose the unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state” because “such a declaration after the October 7 massacre would constitute a huge reward for unprecedented terrorism and would hamper any future peace agreement.”

The war was sparked on October 7 by an incursion by Hamas militants from Gaza who killed more than 1,160 people, mostly civilians, in southern Israel and kidnapped around 250, according to an AFP survey based on official Israeli data.

Israel responded with a bombing campaign and a ground offensive against the Gaza Strip, which has so far killed 29,313 people, most of them civilians, according to the health ministry of that Hamasruled Palestinian territory.

According to the Washington Post, the plan drawn up by President Joe Biden's administration and several USallied Arab countries calls for a ceasefire “of at least six weeks” in Gaza and the release of hostages still in the hands of the Islamist movement and a timetable for the creation of a Palestinian state.

The newspaper quotes senior officials from the US and the Arab world as hoping for an agreement before March 10, when the Muslim holy month of Ramadan begins. (AFP)
