The presence of the example and thought of the patriot Augusto Cesar Sandino was highlighted this Wednesday in Havana when the 90th anniversary of his assassination was commemorated. In front of the statue of the national hero José Martí in the Central Park of the Cuban capital, the ceremony took place in which the Nicaraguan Ambassador to Cuba, His Excellency Mr. Orlando J. Gómez, remembered his legacy and was assassinated by the army of the dictator Anastasio Somoza García.

The diplomat recalled that the anti-imperialist hero was betrayed and, together with his general staff, sacrificed his life for the audacity to lead the army in defense of national sovereignty from September 1927 to January 1933 and his fight against the presence of the Yankees sailors. on Nicaraguan land.
The speaker pointed out that the general, also known as the General of the Free Men, represents his people's dialectical response to a century and a half long history of injustices. Cubans and Nicaraguans laid flowers for Sandino in front of the monument to commemorate the leadership and class consciousness of this figure and to underline the validity of his anti-imperialist thoughts. The honoring ceremony was attended by ambassadors and other representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited to Cuba.
