Did your iPhone fall into water? Don't put it in rice, says Apple

Placing a wet phone in uncooked rice has been a popular drying method for years. This method is recommended by bloggers and experts.

But Apple recently responded to the belief that rice was the best solution on an Apple support page on its website.

What you shouldn't do

If your iPhone gets wet, you may see a liquid detection warning. Charging and connecting accessories is only possible if the plug, cable ends and accessories are dry, according to a statement from Apple on January 8th.

“Don’t put your wet iPhone in a bag of rice. This could cause small particles of rice to damage your iPhone,” explains Apple what you shouldn’t do.

The tech giant also advises users against drying the iPhone using an external heat source such as a hairdryer or compressed air.

It's not a good idea to insert a foreign object such as a cotton swab or paper towel into the port, he adds.

What to do

If your iPhone or accessory gets wet, Apple recommends first disconnecting the cable from your device and then disconnecting the other end of the cable from the power adapter or accessory.

“Do not reconnect the cable until your iPhone and the cable are completely dry,” writes Apple.

To remove any liquid from the device, gently tap your iPhone against your hand with the connector facing down.

Wait at least 30 minutes for it to dry, then try charging it with a Lightning or USB-C cable or connecting an accessory.

It is best to leave it in a dry, ventilated place for up to a day until the liquid detection warning no longer appears.

“During this time, you can try charging or connecting an accessory again,” Apple adds. “It may take up to 24 hours to dry completely.”

Is your phone dry but still not charging? Apple recommends unplugging the adapter cable and unplugging the adapter from the wall if possible. Afterwards, it is advisable to reconnect them to see if anything has changed.

Emergency charging

In an emergency, you may need to charge your iPhone when it is wet.

“When you reconnect your iPhone to the cable or accessory, you have the option to override liquid detection and charge your iPhone in an emergency,” Apple says.

You can also use a wireless charger. However, make sure the back of the device is dry before placing it on the charger.
