“I completely disagree with Lula, Blinken says after discussing the Holocaust

The US secretary of state says that despite differences, the US and Brazil must work together to end the war

This Thursday (February 22, 2024), US Secretary of State Antony Blinken once again publicly contradicted President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT)'s comparison between Israel's military action in the Gaza Strip and the genocide of the Jews promoted by Adolf Hitler.

“We have many common goals. But I completely and deeply disagree with the comparison to the Holocaust. But that happens with friends. We can have differences of opinion and work together at the same time. And we agree that we must act together to end the conflict,” Blinken told reporters.

Blinken had already made it clear during his meeting with Lula on Wednesday (February 21) in Brasília that the US government is divided on this issue.

The minister also said that the best way to end the conflict in Gaza is to “work on the hostages,” which he said is constantly being discussed.

“[Resolver o impasse sobre os reféns] It is the fastest and most efficient way to get where we want. We want this conflict to end as quickly as possible. And may the suffering of the innocents caught in this Hamas crossfire end. We also have to think about the postwar period,” said Antony Blinken.

The Biden administration representative came to Brazil to attend the meeting of foreign ministers of the G20 countries. The meeting was marred by tensions between the Brazilian government and Israel, as Lula was considered “persona non grata” in the country, prompting the PT member to recant.

This Thursday (February 22), Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said at the end of the meeting that the G20 was unanimous on the creation of a Palestinian state as a solution to the conflict.
