IXE-13: The Race for Uranium
“Photo provided by CLUB ILLICO”
Before being brought to the screen by filmmaker Jacques Godbout with Les Cyniques and currently reread by Gilles Desjardins with Marc-André Grondin, Vincent Leclerc and Julie LeBreton, IXE-13 was the hero of a series of novels by Pierre Saurel (more correctly Name Pierre). Daigneault) was published between 1947 and 1966. It consisted of 934 small booklets illustrated by André L'Archevêque, which Éditions de l'Homme has recently republished. In a sense, IXE-13 is our James Bond. He is a spy, a disguised ace, a charismatic man who influenced important parts of our history at the beginning of the Second World War. The race for uranium, led by director Yan Lanouette Turgeon, takes us to the beginnings of the Cold War. A series of great visual quality with documented dialogues performed by inspired actors.

Surprising detective: the girl with the stone eyes
“Photo by Nigel Quinn, provided by Club Illico”
This is not the first time that André Surprenant, created by author Jean Lemieux, has been adapted. We saw it for the first time in the cinema (The Fear of Water in 2012), but the proposal from director Yannick Savard and screenwriters Marie-Ève Bourassa and Maureen Martineau is worth a closer look. We are transported to the Magdalen Islands, into autumn landscapes we never see. As the tourists leave, the mayor's daughter is found murdered. Surprisingly, the person who despite himself leads a quieter existence there than in the city takes charge of the investigation. Forces deployed from outside arrive and remind him of a painful past. This adaptation is a really good Nordic-style thriller.

The gentleman burglar Arsène Lupine has delighted readers and fans of investigations for over 100 years. He comes from the imagination of Maurice Leblanc and is often compared to the English Sherlock Holmes. An anarchist master of disguise, he inspires Assane Diop, a clever and charismatic thief who wants to avenge his father, who is falsely accused of robbing a rich family of a precious jewel. Since then, Diop, superbly played by Omar Sy, has been the most wanted man in France, multiplying masquerades and illusionism and attacking the wealthiest. It is said that the Lupine series would be the biggest non-English success on the Netflix platform. Three seasons are available. Excitement that makes you want to re-read classics of French literature.

The world of Gabrielle Roy

If there is one French-Canadian author who has stood the test of time and is still studied in schools, it is Gabrielle Roy. This series by Renée Blanchar, which currently has two seasons, initially focuses on the young author's childhood. It was texts from the novel Rue Deschambault that inspired her. The second series takes a look at the young woman in her twenties, particularly those of Distress and Enchantment. It's Romane Denis who plays him. A historical series that we rarely do (1920s) and the opportunity to delve into his work again.

The Scarlet Maid

Even though Margaret Atwood seemed to be doing science fiction when she wrote The Handmaid's Tale, a science fiction novel that spawned five TV seasons, we must admit that the rise of the right and the fall of the right Abortion are reasonably close to each other. The book was published in 1985, the series hit our airwaves between 2017 and 2022. A final season is scheduled to see the light of day in 2025. We follow June, renamed Offred, in her new totalitarian reality, where she is forced to become the servant of a commander (Fred Waterford) to ensure his reproduction. As the seasons progress, she will resist, fight, and campaign. For other women, for her and to find her daughter who was taken from her. A disturbing story, winner of several awards. Some very hard images stick in your head.

The Bridgerton Chronicles

Producer Shonda Rhimes recognized the potential of Julia Quinn's literary saga. There she documents the heartfelt stories of London's upper middle class in the 18th century. Everyone is addicted to well-reported gossip. And we added a touch of modernism, feminism and sensuality. Long live the balls and the gossip. A third work about the adventures of the Bridgerton family is scheduled to be published next May. A series is now also available that is dedicated to Queen Charlotte's extravagant and enthusiastic youth.
