John Legend says he and Chrissy Teigen were “tested” after losing son Jack… but they were “amazed by the outpouring of love” after going public
John Legend addressed the deep pain he and wife Chrissy Teigen felt after the loss of their son Jack in a new interview with The Guardian.
The 43-year-old singer-songwriter admitted he and Chrissy were “tested” by the family tragedy, although they were strengthened by the amazing “outpouring of love” they received from their friends and fans.
John and his model wife, 36, were looking forward to the birth of their third child, who they had already named Jack before suffering a stillbirth in September 2020.
Devastating: John Legend, 43, said he and his wife Chrissy Teigen, 36, were “tested” following the loss of their son Jack in September 2020, according to The Guardian
Rather than retiring from the public eye following her loss, Chrissy chose to share her worries on social media in a post featuring heartbreaking photos of her and John cradling little Jack.
“We are in shock and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before,” she wrote at the time.
“It was a tragedy,” John said of the loss. “But I think it strengthened our resolve and our resilience because we were there for each other. We’ve become even more confident about who we are as a couple and as a family.
According to him, the couple felt the need to talk about losing the pregnancy after already sharing their entire journey.
Staying strong: “It was a tragedy,” John said of the loss. “But I think it strengthened our resolve and our resilience because we were there for each other. We came out even more confident about who we were as a couple and as a family.
To the End: John said Chrissy felt the need to share the end of her pregnancy as she had documented her entire journey, but they were “amazed by the outpouring of love and support” they received in response; seen April 26 in NYC
“It was raw to share our experience,” John continued. “I was worried but our instinct was to do it because people knew we were pregnant and Chrissy felt she had to tell the full story of what happened.”
While it was difficult to share such a painful experience, he and Chrissy were “amazed by the love and support” they received in response, particularly from people who have been in similar situations.
“We found out how many other families have been through this,” he added. “It was a powerful and brave thing that Chrissy did to share this because it made so many people feel seen and not alone.”

Legend opened up about the pregnancy loss ahead of the release of his eighth studio album, which is due out later this year, although a title has not yet been announced.
While it’s expected to feature much of the more playful material he’s known for, as the lead single Dope exemplifies, the emotions of his loss also inform some of the songs.
“There is music that deals with grief and what it feels like to grieve and trying to pick up the pieces after losing something. When you lose a pregnancy and you have to go through that grief together, it can be really difficult for a family,” he explained. “Hopefully making music out of this can be healing for me and for other people too.”
Trying again: They announced in February that they were trying to have another child, and Chrissy told ET in March that she had completed a round of IVF treatments
Despite their difficult experience, John and Chrissy still have hope to expand their family.
She told Entertainment Tonight in March that she recently completed IVF.
“I’ve completed my IVF portion, so I feel so much healthier and so much better,” she said.
The Chrissy’s Court star previously shared in February this year that the two were trying to have another child.
