American Idol host Ryan Seacrest had a dressing room emergency during Sunday’s live broadcast of the finale.
Seacrest swapped boxers with a stylist named Miles during the commercial break – a quick fix to the problem of Seacrest’s “anatomy” referring to his genitals peeking out through his pants.
Seacrest shared the story with his co-host Kelly Ripa during Monday morning’s episode of “Live with Kelly and Ryan.”
“Miles is responsible for the suits I put on — making sure everything is buttoned up and buttoned,” Seacrest told Ripa. “You know, when you walk into an ad and they’re like, ‘Can I tell you something? You need to change your underwear.’”
The presenter said he was initially confused, then was told viewers had noticed “anatomy in the shot” of Seacrest on stage in his dress pants. But Seacrest didn’t have any extra underwear. The host says Miles simply told him, “Don’t worry, I’ve got mine.” The two men quickly undressed and exchanged boxer shorts.
“He’s English so he has shorter, tighter ones,” Seacrest explained to an outraged Ripa, who insisted the solution should have been changing the camera angle, not swapping underwear.
“So during the commercial we go backstage and we find a little corner and I literally take off my pants and underwear and put his on,” Seacrest said. “Everything for the show, right? It’s a family show.”
Ripa asked him to explain exactly what was going on with his “underpants”.
“Was it decreasing or increasing?” she asked, referring to whether the problem made his genitals appear smaller or larger.
“I haven’t read the comments and I never will,” Seacrest replied. But then a viewer appeared to confirm it was “improving,” and Ripa said she’d insisted the original underwear “stay.”
Seacrest ended the segment by saying there was “a panic” about the underwear, but Miles fixed it and made it a “TV First” for the veteran host.
