Cuba reaffirms its commitment to tuberculosis eradication

José Ángel Portal Miranda, Cuba's Minister of Public Health, today reaffirmed his country's commitment to working to meet the World Health Organization's (WHO) goal of eradicating tuberculosis by 2030.

Havana, March 24 (ACN) Jose Angel Portal MirandaMinister for Cuban Public Healthtoday reiterated his country’s commitment to work to fulfill the purpose of the World Health Organization (WHO) advance tuberculosis eradication by 2030.

Via the social network Twitter regarding the celebration this Thursday of World Tuberculosis Daystressed the headline that Cuba maintains a low incidence and mortality rate of this disease.

“On #WorldTBDay, #Cuba reaffirms that it will continue to work towards fulfilling #WHO’s purpose of advancing the eradication of this disease by 2030. Our country maintains low incidence and mortality rates from #tuberculosis, Portal Miranda wrote.

Every year on March 24th, the World Tuberculosis (TB) Dayto raise awareness of the dire health, social and economic consequences of this infectious disease and to speed up efforts to end the epidemic.

This date is remembered because Dr. Robert Koch announced on this day in 1882 that he had discovered the tuberculosis bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which made it possible to diagnose and cure the disease.

“Let’s invest in ending TB. Let’s save lives” is the motto of the celebrations in 2022.

According to the WHO, more than 4,100 people die from tuberculosis every day and about 28,000 contract the disease, although it can be prevented and cured.

Since 2000, global TB efforts have saved an estimated 66 million lives.
