Receiver market may cut Seattle’s DK Metcalf price

Recently, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said the team would do everything possible to keep wide receiver D.K. Metcalfe. Ultimately, this may not be enough.

With the Chargers signing Mike Williams, the Raiders signing Davante Adams and the Dolphins signing Tyreke Hill, the market has gone crazy lately. And these developments will definitely affect the Seahawks’ willingness and ability to pay Metcalfe.

Speaking Thursday at 7:10 a.m. in Seattle, Seahawks CEO John Schneider was asked about the impact of recent receiver contracts on Metcalfe’s situation and, in particular, whether these new contracts give the Seahawks more urgency to close the deal.

“This feeling of shock when you see where the numbers are going, especially in that position,” Schneider said via TheAthletic.com’s Michael-Sean Dugar. Everyone loves DC. He is an excellent player. People have to plan a game for him and he affects every game he’s in, whether it’s people changing the lights in his direction, or he just runs straight through the lights, or makes the guys play the man when he just throws people away. From him. It affects games, there is no doubt about it. We love him. Everyone in the building loves it. Particularly with extensions and contract situations, we don’t go into that. Yes, he is an incredible player. That’s a great question because when you look at him in the league you see the Davante deal, the Mike Williams deal and obviously what happened with Tyreek.”

Metcalfe is set to earn $3.986 million in 2022, the final year of his rookie contract. The Seahawks would then be able to apply the franchise tag or trade it.

Or they can trade it now if they get an offer they can’t or don’t want to refuse. It all comes down to whether another team with an eff-them-pick mentality decides to invest in draft picks and cap space to appease the Seahawks and Metcalfe.

And Metcalfe is clearly not untouchable. The only supposedly untouchable player in Seattle was officially traded to Denver eight days ago.
