the gist A rare event occurred around noon: 99% of the world’s population was under the sun at the same time.

It is an extraordinary event that took place this Friday, July 8th. At around 1:15 p.m. French time, 99% of the earth’s population received sunlight.

At the same time, “7.7 billion people—about 99% of us—were on the sunlit side of the planet. More than 6.4 billion of them experienced daytime, while more than 1.2 billion people experienced twilight,” the scientists explain.

Absolute black sky

However, some inhabitants of our planet literally did not receive sunlight. In fact, some faced “absolute black twilight” skies.

According to the website, “a few hundred million people” on the supposedly sunny side of the world thought it was night.

“256.8 million people, or about 3% of the world’s population” could not see sunlight.
