Biden signs an injunction against repealing abortion rights

Joe BidenThe President of the United States plans to sign an executive order this Friday, July 8, containing measures to counter the Supreme Court ruling overturning the constitutional right to abortion.

According to a White House statement, the executive order aims to “guarantee access to reproductive health services, including abortion and contraception, and protect the privacy and safety of patients and clinics.”

What did Joe Biden say about this?

“A runaway Supreme Court must not restrict freedoms,” the president said in a live appearance from the White House. In addition, she encouraged women to vote in the November midterm elections in a bid to halt the conservative bias. “It’s the quickest way,” he said.

“I really hope and believe that women will turn out (in the elections) in record numbers to claim the rights that the court has taken away from them,” he said. He reminded that if Republicans take control of the House of Representatives, they could pass a national abortion ban.

Gay marriage, access to contraception and other rights are at stake because of the Supreme Court decision, he stressed.

Biden’s action comes just two weeks after the Supreme Court ruled in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case, overturning a half-century precedent set by another ruling, Roe v. Wade, that conferred constitutional status in 1973 abortion protection.

The ruling restores the power to states to legislate on women’s freedom to terminate pregnancy, which was previously guaranteed at the federal level. As a result, 26 of the 50 states plan to seriously restrict or ban access to abortion.

To defend fundamental rights

According to the document, released by the White House early Friday, April 8, the President has directed Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra to protect access to abortion pills, a way anti-abortion groups see as have set their next goal in their war: they intend to pursue its spread.

“Fundamental rights — to privacy, autonomy, liberty and equality — have been denied to millions of women across the country,” the statement said. “It has serious implications for your health, your life and your well-being. This ruling will disproportionately hit low-income women of color and people living in rural areas.”

Likewise, the order that Biden is now signing also oversees patient privacy, as well as their access to accurate information and the confidentiality of their data. As such, a guide will be released, assuring physicians that “with limited exceptions, they have no obligation, and in many cases have no authority, to disclose patients’ private information, including to law enforcement agencies,” he said in the White House text.
