This narrative indie classic follows the story of a fire warden working in the Shoshone National Forest in the late 1980s. The first-person adventure game made a lasting impression with a visual style, vibrant low-poly that is simply stunning. Add to this an engaging story full of twists and surprises as the player explores the Shoshone Wilderness and uncovers clues in a plot that grows stranger by the minute.

Sea of Solitude is a poignant game that explores subjects rarely explored in this medium. One reviewer described it as “a dazzling and cathartic exploration of mental health, and a rare and daring game that tackles depression and its causes head on”. .

The game’s story follows twins Tyler and Alyson (who share the ability to communicate telepathically) as they return to rural Alaska after a 10-year absence to investigate the untimely death of their mother.

From adventure gaming legends to Telltale games, The Walking Dead The Complete First Season draws more inspiration from the comics than the TV series. The game features original characters and focuses on story and character development. The game is a true classic that has received critical acclaim – particularly for its storytelling – including multiple Game of the Year awards. Even if you don’t consider yourself a fan of the franchise, as a player you owe it to yourself to experience it.

We round things out with another post from Annapurna Interactive. Developed by indie developer Giant Sparrow (aka The Unfinished Swan), What Remains of Edith Finch is one of the shining examples of video gaming as art.
Winner of multiple gaming awards including the British Academy Games Award for Best Game 2017, it is a first-person adventure game in which the player, as the eponymous Edith Finch, re-explores her childhood home as the last surviving member of her so-called cursed family. On the journey, the player encounters a number of memorials to deceased relatives, where he discovers vignettes of the relative’s death.
