“We are all shocked,” Prime Minister Dritan Abazovic said, according to Montenegrin state television. The killing was an “unprecedented tragedy”. The medieval town of Cetinje, located 27 kilometers west of the capital Podgorica, is considered the cultural and historical center of Montenegro and was the country’s capital from the late 15th century until 1918.

First two children shot

Six injured were taken to hospitals. Three of them were in danger of death, said the director of the Clinical Center of Montenegro (KCCG), Ljiljana Radulovic. One of the injured was released home shortly afterwards.

The perpetrator first shot two children aged eight and 10 with a hunting rifle, said local police chief Zoran Brdjanin. He then shot the children’s mother, who later died in hospital.

The family lived as a tenant in an apartment belonging to the perpetrator. The assailant apparently shot indiscriminately at bystanders on the street with the same gun, killing seven. A police officer was also injured in the shooting.
