Thinking can sometimes help us make decisions and deal with the adversities that life throws at us. But as with all things, it’s good not to overdo it, because overthinking it can also hurt. This has been confirmed by a study carried out by the University of the Salpêtrière in Paris, thanks to which the mental effects stemming from a day of thought and reflection. Above all, thinking tires the brain, which accumulates substances in the prefrontal cortex that could be toxic.
In particular, during the study, the mental activity of the brain of some subjects during a working day was monitored by magnetic resonance spectroscopy (female). And the data showed that only those engaged in continuous and intense mental activity experienced deep fatigue. In particular, higher concentrations of the molecule were found in these individuals glutamate. And it would be this molecule present in large amounts to make cognitive control more difficult.
Hence the researchers’ advice: it’s better to avoid making important decisions at the end of the day, especially when it’s marked by intense mental activity. Also because that way we are better aligned to make the simplest and quickest decision, even if it’s not necessarily the right one.
But what is that remedy faced with this condition? Unfortunately, avoiding this obstacle is not possible because the brain always tends to behave this way. But what we can do to prevent the problem and avoid this tired state is to rest and sleep. In fact, according to other studies, rest has been found to facilitate the elimination of glutamate.
