Elon Musk trolls Biden invites United Auto Workers union to vote to organize work at Tesla

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has invited the United Auto Workers union to hold a vote at the company this week after Biden declined to mention the electric vehicle pioneer in a speech on the state of the Union on Tuesday night.

The president advertised Ford and GM’s investment in electric vehicles, prompting Musk to tweet that Tesla “has created more than 50,000 jobs in the United States” and “is investing more than double GM + Ford combined.”

Then Kiss singer Gene Simmons noted that Biden probably did not mention Musk because Tesla workers were not united in unions and the company recently moved its headquarters to Austin, Texas.

Musk said Tesla was still running its “California plant, which is the largest car plant in North America, at full capacity and is considering significant expansion.”

“Our real challenge is that Bay Area has negative unemployment, so if we don’t treat and compensate our (great) people well, they have a lot of other offers and they’ll just leave!” Musk said. “I would now like to invite the UAW to hold a union vote when it is convenient for them. Tesla will do nothing to stop them.

A spokesman for the UAW union declined to comment on Musk’s tweet on Thursday night.

Musk’s apparent newfound openness to unions will be a face for the tech entrepreneur.

An administrative justice judge ruled in 2019 that Musk had violated labor laws by tweeting that workers would have to give up stock options if they voted for unionization. Tesla has since appealed the decision.

Tesla has also faced a series of lawsuits by officials accused of “widespread sexual harassment” and racial discrimination.
