Sri Lanka: Prime Minister Talks to Nation, Stops Fuel Sales Latest Hour

(ANSA) NEW DELHI, APRIL 11 Awaiting in Sri Lanka for Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s speech to the nation tonight.

After crowds peacefully besieged the entrance to the government seat in Colombo over the weekend, clashes erupted between supporters of the prime minister and a group calling for his resignation in Chilaw today.

Police said security forces intervened to disperse the protesters and revealed tensions reached a fever pitch when government supporters, led by a former minister, Sanath Nishantha, attacked the protesters.

The Daily Mirror newspaper reports that a group of foreign tourists, unable to leave the country due to a lack of fuel, started a demonstration in Ambagonda today, asking for the PM’s help.

According to the newspaper, a 43yearold man was found dead this morning, apparently of natural causes, in his car, parked outside a petrol station where he had queued to fill up last night. The national fuel company has announced that sales of petrol and diesel will be suspended for three days starting tomorrow. (HAND).
