The warning will start. The European coast and border protection agency Frontex announces that the European Union is facing a significant wave of illegal immigration and recalls the situation in 2016. In the first nine months of 2022 alone, 228,000 people illegally crossed the European border.

It’s an exploding number. Illegal immigration to the European Union is experiencing an almost unprecedented increase in the territory of the 27. Between January and September 2022 alone, the number of illegal entries increased by 70%, according to the European Border and Coast Guard. Almost 228,000 people have entered European territory illegally since the beginning of the year, the most since 2016.

political contradictions

To give you an idea, this corresponds to the population of the city of Lille. This explosion of illegal immigration can be partly explained by the numerous crises facing the countries of origin. But for Gérard-François Dumont, president of the magazine Population et Avenir, European politics must also be questioned.

“There is a contradiction within the European Union. This is the case with the speeches that say that we are going to create an alliance that will make it possible to better monitor the borders and thus limit irregular immigration, and at the same time there are political actions and political speeches, also from an EU -Commissioner who say that Frontex should not block people at the borders of the European Union,” emphasizes the professor.

The Balkan route, a very attractive route

The currently most active migration route is that of the Balkans, which leads from Turkey to the Old Continent via Greece or Bulgaria and the countries of the former Yugoslavia. Since the beginning of the year, more than 106,000 irregular entries have been registered there, an increase of 170% within one year. This route was mainly used by Syrians, Afghans and Turks. But now more and more migrants from Maghreb countries or India are trying their luck in Europe in this way.
