49ers receiver Deebo Samuel has earned a major contract. The issue became a major flashpoint in recent days after Samuel removed all references to the 49ers from his social media accounts.
Fans of the team are aware of the situation. And they let Deebo hear about it.
Samuel has posted a video in which he says he receives death threats and racist comments in his direct messages on social media. It’s sad and it’s shameful, but it’s not surprising. Fans consistently stand behind the laundry in contract disputes. The player is always to blame in the eyes of most fans – even if the team is unfair or unreasonable. Because in the eyes of most fans, the player is the one who should be happy with what they get.
Death threats are a regular feature on social media. For whatever reason, they don’t seem to be investigated and prosecuted in the same way as, say, a death threat, whether delivered verbally or by mail.
It’s not just 49ers fans. Fans of every team behave like this. Shut up and talk to us. Stop being greedy or selfish. take what they give you
That’s nonsense. It is wrong. The players take the physical risks. The players are the reason people tune in. Players need to get what they can while they can. And fans need to understand that they would want the same for their son, brother, nephew, cousin, boyfriend or themselves.
