Jerry Seinfeld took to social media to pay tribute to his Seinfeld TV mother, Liz Sheridan, who died today at the age of 93.
“Liz has always been the sweetest, kindest TV mom any son could wish for,” the comedian and actor wrote on Twitter. “Every time she came to our show, it was the most comfortable feeling for me. So lucky to have known her” (see tweet below).

Sheridan was already a veteran television and film actress when she was cast on Seinfeld as Jerry’s loving, protective, and occasionally confused mother. She had appeared in three dozen episodes of the NBC sitcom ALF from 1986 to 1990 and appeared in more than 20 episodes of “Show About Nothing” – from episode 2 to the 1998 finale.
Seinfeld debuted on NBC as a summer substitute entitled The Seinfeld Chronicles in July 1989. From there, starring Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Michael Richards, the series had a steep climb but landed on Thursday at 9:30 p.m. after Cheers on the following Spring. The show’s popularity increased with each subsequent season, eventually breaking into the postseason top 25 in the Nielsen rankings in 1992-93 after Cheers ended its 12-season run.
Seinfeld took over the 9 p.m. slot from Cheers for the 1993-94 season, finishing it 3rd among all primetime shows. It would rank No. 1 or 2 overall for the remainder of its nine-year run, which ended in 1998.
Sheridan was the last surviving “parent” of Seinfeld. Estelle Harris, who played George Costanza’s mother Estelle, died just last week, and Jerry Stiller, who played Frank Costanza, died in 2020. Barney Martin, who played Sheridan’s onscreen husband Morty Seinfeld, died in 2005.
