An impressive fire breaks out not far from Geneva, and its plume of smoke reaches as far as Haute-Savoie

A fire broke out on the roof of a climbing gym near Geneva, Switzerland, on Sunday afternoon. Hundreds of firefighters were mobilized. No injuries are reported.

The black plume of smoke was visible as far away as Haute-Savoie. On Sunday, April 17, a major fire broke out in a climbing gym in the Meyrin-Satigny industrial area (Switzerland) between Geneva and the Pays de Gex. The roof of a building containing a parking lot and a climbing room caught fire in the middle of the afternoon, reports La Tribune de Genève.

Hundreds of firefighters were called to the scene. Ten people were evacuated from the building, nobody was injured. The fire quickly spread through the climbing hall. And the foam mattresses used to cushion the climbers’ falls are very flammable, which would have resulted in significant smoke emissions.

The fire was finally brought under control in the evening. The building almost completely collapsed. An investigation to determine the cause of the accident is underway. In Haute-Savoie and Ain, firefighters received dozens of calls from witnesses reporting the heavy smoke.
