Agatha Christie’s Poirot: The Box of Chocolates

Poirot returns to his hometown of Brussels after more than 20 years to join Chief Inspector Japp in a tribute to his Belgian police work. Along the way he runs into old acquaintances and the conversation turns to a case that Poirot has failed to solve. At the behest of a lovely lady, he was to find out whether the Belgian Minister Paul Deroulard died of natural causes or was murdered. Now, years after the event, it’s time for Poirot to uncover the truth and save his reputation. With the episode “The Box of Chocolates” the series jumps into Hercule Poirot’s past, in the years before the First World War. Poirot works here for the first time as a private detective. He resigned from the police service for the investigation and is now trying on his own to clarify the death of Belgian minister Paul Deroulard, which has been officially shelved because the cause of death is considered natural. Poirot’s professional ambitions are sparked by the charming Virginie Mesnard, who believes Deroulard has been murdered. She, in turn, is so thrilled with Poirot’s engagement that she gives him the vase brooch, which he always wears from then on.
